Tamil Nadu is gearing up for another round of heavy rainfall this Saturday, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing statewide alerts as a fresh cyclonic circulation gathers strength over the Bay of Bengal. Coastal capital Chennai, along with 19 other districts including Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam, is expected to be hit by widespread showers.
The upcoming wet spell follows a brief dry patch, but weather experts say the resurgence of the northeast monsoon, aided by the developing low-pressure system, will likely bring persistent rainfall through the weekend. Many of the districts under alert saw soaking rains earlier this week, with waterlogging reported in several parts of Chennai, a situation that may worsen if rains intensify.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and avoid low-lying, flood-prone areas, especially along the coast. Given the potential for thunderstorms and gusty winds, people are also being cautioned against unnecessary travel. As the rain returns, the renewed showers might bring relief from humidity and warmer temperatures, but also pose challenges for daily life, with likely disruptions in traffic and utility services across the affected regions.
