AMC to Set Up ₹29-Crore Advanced Food Safety Lab on CG Road

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is moving ahead with an ambitious plan to establish a state-of-the-art food testing laboratory on the bustling CG Road, aiming to significantly strengthen the city’s food safety infrastructure. Estimated at ₹29 crore, the new lab will enable detailed testing of pesticides, heavy metals, harmful chemicals, microbes, and bacterial contamination commonly found in food samples collected from markets, eateries, and manufacturing units.

According to officials, the upcoming facility will be equipped with modern instruments such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometers, and advanced microbial testing systems. This will allow AMC to conduct faster, more precise, and a wider range of analyses compared to its existing laboratory, which often faces limitations in capacity and equipment.

The civic body expects the new lab to reduce dependency on state and private labs, speeding up legal action against violators and improving public health monitoring. With rising concerns over adulteration in dairy products, spices, edible oils, fruits, and packaged foods, officials say the enhanced facility will play a crucial role in safeguarding consumer health.

Construction work is expected to begin soon, with AMC aiming to make the laboratory fully operational within the next two years.
