A growing divergence has surfaced between the United States and India over why recent bilateral trade negotiations failed to reach a breakthrough, with the US Commerce Secretary and officials in New Delhi offering sharply different explanations for the breakdown. The contrasting accounts underline persistent fault lines in one of the world’s most strategically important economic relationships, even as both sides publicly insist that long-term ties remain strong.
Speaking in Washington, the US Commerce Secretary suggested that the talks stalled due to India’s reluctance to offer deeper market access and regulatory clarity, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, digital trade, and manufacturing. According to the US version, negotiators had pushed for commitments on lowering tariffs, easing non-tariff barriers, and ensuring predictable rules for American companies operating in India. The failure to secure firm assurances, the Secretary implied, left little room to move forward.
However, Indian officials presented a very different picture.
