Cyclone Ditwah has caused severe devastation across Sri Lanka, leaving 46 people dead and dozens more injured as the powerful storm system swept through coastal and central districts. The cyclone brought torrential rainfall, flash floods, and destructive winds, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and triggering multiple landslides. Emergency response teams have been deployed nationwide, while thousands of families have been moved to temporary shelters as a precaution.
The Sri Lankan government has issued strict advisories urging citizens to avoid flooded regions and stay indoors unless necessary. Rescue operations are still underway, particularly in the worst-hit regions where communication lines and road connectivity have been disrupted.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed parts of Tamil Nadu under a yellow alert, anticipating heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong coastal winds over the next 48 hours. Districts likely to be affected include Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Cuddalore.
Fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea, and coastal communities are being monitored closely. Authorities in Tamil Nadu have also prepared relief teams, activated control rooms, and arranged for emergency shelters to ensure rapid response if conditions worsen.
The situation continues to evolve as Cyclone Ditwah gradually moves northwestward.
