Gujarat Gears Up for a Grand International Kite Festival 2026 With Statewide Celebrations and PM Modi’s Likely Visit

Gujarat is preparing to paint its skies with colour and celebration as the International Kite Festival (IKF) 2026 is set to unfold across multiple cities in the state, turning the annual cultural event into a truly statewide spectacle. Beginning on January 10, the festival will span several iconic destinations before culminating in grand celebrations in Ahmedabad, reaffirming Gujarat’s position as the global hub of kite-flying traditions.

This year’s edition marks a significant expansion of the festival’s footprint. The opening day on January 10 will see vibrant kite-flying events simultaneously held in Rajkot, Surat, and Dholavira, blending urban enthusiasm with the historic charm of Gujarat’s heritage sites. The following day, January 11, festivities will move to Shivrajpur, Statue of Unity (SOU)–Ekta Nagar, and Vadnagar, showcasing the festival’s reach across coastal, cultural, and tourism-focused locations.

The highlight of the International Kite Festival will once again be Ahmedabad, which will host the main celebrations from January 12 to January 14. The city, long regarded as the heart of Gujarat’s kite-flying culture, is expected to witness massive crowds, international kite flyers, and elaborate cultural programmes. The iconic Sabarmati Riverfront is likely to be the focal point, with its open skies and scenic setting providing the perfect backdrop for the festivities.

Meanwhile, Vadodara will celebrate the festival on January 13, while Hanol and Palitana will host events on January 14, ensuring that the spirit of Uttarayan resonates across religious, cultural, and historical landmarks of the state. The staggered schedule allows visitors and participants to experience the festival in multiple locations, turning it into a week-long cultural journey through Gujarat.

Adding to the excitement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Gujarat during the festival, with strong indications that he may attend the Ahmedabad Kite Festival on January 11 or 12. His presence would lend national and international prominence to the event, which already attracts participants from several countries. The Prime Minister is also likely to visit the Ahmedabad International Flower Show 2026, scheduled at the Sabarmati Riverfront around the same time, making his trip a celebration of both cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The International Kite Festival is not just about flying kites it is a powerful symbol of Gujarat’s cultural identity. Each year, it brings together traditional Indian kite designs, innovative international creations, music, folk performances, and local cuisine. For many, it also marks the transition of seasons, celebrated with family gatherings and community bonding.

State tourism and cultural departments view the expanded format as a strategic move to boost tourism, local economies, and global visibility. Hotels, artisans, food vendors, and local businesses are expected to benefit significantly from the influx of domestic and international visitors.

As Gujarat counts down to January 10, anticipation is building across cities and villages alike. With colourful kites ready to soar, cultural pride on full display, and the possibility of the Prime Minister’s presence, the International Kite Festival 2026 promises to be one of the most expansive and memorable editions in its history a true celebration of sky, tradition, and unity.
