Gujarat’s Urban Traffic Gets a Makeover: 10 Double-Decker Flyovers Planned to Ease Congestion

Gujarat is preparing for a major transformation in its urban transport infrastructure as plans move ahead for the construction of 10 double-decker flyovers across key cities. The ambitious proposal is aimed at tackling chronic traffic congestion, reducing travel time, and future-proofing mobility in rapidly expanding urban centres such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot.

With vehicle ownership rising steadily and road space remaining limited, conventional road-widening solutions are no longer enough. Double-decker flyovers featuring two elevated levels of traffic movement are being seen as a smart, space-efficient alternative. These structures allow traffic to flow in multiple directions simultaneously, easing pressure on busy junctions without requiring large-scale land acquisition.

According to officials involved in the planning process, the proposed flyovers will be strategically located at high-density corridors where traffic bottlenecks are a daily challenge. Each structure is expected to segregate local and through traffic, with one deck catering to long-distance commuters and the other serving city-level movement. This separation is likely to significantly reduce signal delays and improve average travel speeds.

Beyond congestion relief, the project is also being pitched as a step toward safer roads. By streamlining traffic flow and minimising intersections at ground level, authorities expect a reduction in accidents and pedestrian conflicts. Modern design features such as smart lighting, CCTV surveillance, and real-time traffic monitoring systems are also expected to be integrated into the flyovers.

Urban planners believe the economic impact could be substantial. Faster movement of goods and people can improve productivity, cut fuel wastage, and lower emissions caused by idling vehicles. For commercial hubs and industrial zones, smoother connectivity may translate into better business efficiency and enhanced investor confidence.

However, the plan is not without challenges. Construction of double-decker flyovers is complex and capital-intensive, requiring careful engineering to ensure structural safety and minimal disruption during execution. Authorities have indicated that work will be carried out in phases, with traffic diversion plans and night-time construction to reduce inconvenience to commuters.

Environmental considerations are also part of the discussion. Officials have said that tree transplantation, noise control measures, and sustainable construction practices will be prioritised to balance development with ecological responsibility.

If implemented successfully, the double-decker flyover project could redefine how Gujarat approaches urban mobility. It reflects a shift from short-term fixes to long-term, high-capacity solutions designed for growing cities. For daily commuters long frustrated by traffic snarls, the plan offers hope of smoother, faster, and safer journeys in the years ahead.

As Gujarat continues its push toward becoming a modern, infrastructure-led growth state, these flyovers may soon stand as visible symbols of that transformation literally taking traffic to the next level.
