On this Constitution Day, Narendra Modi has urged citizens to view constitutional duties not as a burden, but as the bedrock of a robust democracy.
In his open letter, he recalled the historic adoption of the Constitution of India in 1949, officially marked each year since 2015, and said its values of dignity, equality and liberty remain more relevant than ever. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi, stressing that rights flow from the performance of duties, and that fulfilling our responsibilities is essential for social and economic progress.
Addressing first-time voters, he encouraged educational institutions to celebrate every 26 November by honouring young citizens turning 18, a symbolic step to instill pride and responsibility among India’s youth. He emphasized that exercising the right to vote is not just a privilege, it’s a duty vital to safeguarding the nation’s future.
Modi concluded by paying tribute to the framers of the Constitution and calling on all citizens to place public duty at the heart of their actions as India strives toward its vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
